Chameleon Hill Lodge is a mid-range/standard establishment on top of a hill overlooking Lake Mutanda’s tranquil rift valley. This artistic lodge is sitting in the shadow of the Virunga Mountains with amazing views of the Virunga massif.

Chameleon Hill Lodge is located in southwestern Uganda in Kisoro district, in between Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Chameleon Hill lodge also has a spacious communal area with an adjacent wooden deck giving you a view over lake Mutanda.

 

The Lodge is a perfect base for gorilla trekking in Nkuringo and as well as Rushaga trail-heads in Bwindi impenetrable national park. The lodge offers amazing nature walks and hikes just as you walk along the same hill where the lodge is located. It is also an hour and a-half drive from Mgahinga Gorilla national park where golden monkey tracking takes place. Chameleon hill lodge is a perfect hideaway for many who love to get away from the noisy world for relaxation.

Accommodation

Chameleon Hill Lodge hold over 13 cottage rooms with en suite bathrooms spreading across the hillside facing lake Mutanda. Each of the rooms/ cottages are colored with an African style furnishing and decor, with an outside sitting area, en-suite bathrooms and captivating beauty that surrounds the lodge. While at your cottage, you would have the most spectacular views of the Virunga’s and Lake Mutanda’s enchanting Islands.

Restaurant

This is where the in-house chef serves all the meals, and guests catch up on the social moments. The building’s walls are decorated with colorful art and for those chilly evenings, there is a romantic fireplace to make sure the ambiance is perfect. The lounge area with a stylish cement sofa, a soft couch, and inviting armchairs spreads a sense of coziness.

The lodge offers early morning tea or coffee brought to your room so you can take in the spacious views.

The meals are three-course served in the communal hall in restaurant style.

Activities done while at Chameleon Hill Lodge include:

• Gorilla tracking

Gorilla tracking is one of the major activities done by guests visiting south western Uganda as they reside at Chameleon Hill Lodge near Mgahinga Gorilla national park.

 

• Golden monkey tracking

Mgahinga Gorilla national park is home to the Golden monkeys that are named after its golden color with black limbs and an impressive crown. These are very interesting and unique species that are endemic to the Virunga region. Hike along the slopes of the dense bamboo forests to experience these beautiful and amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

• Community encounters

You can have a full day trip as you expand your creativity by joining a talented carver who will guide you through the process of carving a gorilla art piece. You can also join a local weaver who introduces you to the skill of basket weaving. On addition to this, you can enter the kitchen to prepare a traditional dish with the local women. Later you enjoy a meal together with the rest of the family as you learn more about their rich cultural heritage and dishes.

• Birding safaris.

Being located next to Lake Mutanda region, this is one of the best bird watching locations in Uganda. The lake attracts a big variety of bird species along its shores and the islands.

• Nature walks

Kisoro district has a very conducive environment that is very favorable for nature walks and sight seeing.

• Hiking Mount Muhavura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabinyo.

Kisoro has a varaity of mountains and hills in Mgahinga Gorilla national park, that guests can hike to get the hiking experience.

• Batwa Trail

You can have a community encounter with Batwa people as they narrate the rich heritage of their culture and how they came to be the original people of the forests.

• Lake Mutanda boat cruise

You can as well decide to have a boat cruise along lake mutanda to see the amazing features of the lake like the surrounding hills, islands, birds as well as beautiful landscapes.

• Canoeing and Kayaking

How to access the lodge

You can access the lodge by both on land and in air. On land, you drive from Enteebe to Kisoro for about 498kms (9hrs and 30m), to reach the lodge.

By air, you can fly from Enteebe to Kisoro airstrip, and then connect to the lodge.
