Narus Valley
Narus Valley is remarkably the most famous place for doing game viewing in Kidepo Valley National Park. Narus Valley, which means ‘muddy area’ among the locals, was also formally known as the water provision point. This area that was always scrambled for by the native tribes, the Napore and the Mening of South Sudan during the dry season.
Today it serves as the heart of tourism in the park due to the presence of water throughout the year. This valley provides permanent water, and through most of the year its wildlife gathers here. Therefore, this area has proper game tracks for game drives, over 4 loop circuits that explore the valley close to Apoka.
About the park
Kidepo Valley National Park nestled in the wild frontier region, lying in the rugged, semi-arid valleys of Karamoja province. It’s in the far north bordering South Sudan, and also apparently the most isolated national park in Uganda. However, the park stands out as one of the best virgin places every wildlife viewer can ever visit safari.
From Kampala, you drive a distance about 520 kilometers (11 hours) heading northwards of Uganda to reach the park. Most of the park is open tree Savannah because of differences in rainfall with annual averages of 89 centimeters (35 in) in Narus and 64 centimeters (25 in) in the Kidepo basin. Vegetation and animal populations vary between the two valleys of which the Narus Valley is part.
Narus River flows in a northwesterly direction through the southern portion of Kidepo Valley National Park in northern Uganda. It joins the larger Kidepo River near Komoloich, about 13 kilometers after entering Eastern Equatorial state of South Sudan.
Visitors to the park get a complete wildlife experience as they spot various animals such as lions, buffaloes, elephants, leopards, zebras, cheetahs, bat-eared fox, waterbucks, warthogs, reedbucks, giraffes, Klipspringer, and the dik-dik, have to pass through and visit Narus valley.
Animals in the park trek through long distances to Narus valley and the water holes adjacent to Apoka tourist office. This usually takes place during harsh climatic conditions or in the afternoon when the sun over hits the park. Therefore this is an open opportunities for travelers to spot various animals as they are close to them.
Bird life
Also, bird watching trips take place within the same valley as visitors move through searching for these unique bird species. The Ostrich, the biggest and fastest bird on land is only present here in the wild, plus nearby game reserves. Visitors also get to see a number of bird species like the Abyssinian ground hornbill, woodpecker, White-bellied go-away bird secretary birds, Karamoja Apalis Silver shrike, little weaver, Vivacious bird, among others. Most of the birds are present and station at the edge of the valley since it contains hot spots such as swamps. The topography is flat with trees and shot grass making it easy to do bird watching for bird lovers.
